Nature Header

Posted on January 5th, 2008

Design a fresh nature header in photoshop.

Step one:

Start with a big enough canvas for a full size canvas to fit in, in this tutorial my canvas was 900px x 400px.
Make a new layer-set called Nature. In a new layer draw your header size with #334600 ink. The header size in this tutorial is 800px x 200px.
Add the following layer styles: Inner Glow.

Step two:

In a new layer draw a black rectangle inside the green glowing border.
Add the following layer styles: Drop Shadow/a>, Gradient Overlay, Stroke.

Step three:

In a new layer draw a white 1px line on the edge of the center green spot.
Set layer’s blending mode to Dissolve and opacity level to 15%.
Make a new layer and merge it with the dissolve line.
Set layer’s blending mode to Soften light and opacity level to 80%.

Step four:

Make another dissolve line for the opposite side of the header.

Step five:

Now were going to add details to the order. With the eclipse tool draw a #557500 eclipse as show on the picture guide below. The exact size of this eclipse is 10px x 90px, if you want the exact same results make sure your size is close to those numbers.
Add the following layer styles: Gradient Overlay, Stroke.

Step six:

Duplicate and position the design on the opposite end of the header.

Step seven:

If you want to add details facing horizontal, you need to make a new layer and merge it with the eclipse shape layer.
Set layer’s opacity level to 14%.

Step eight:

  • Make different shapes, the goal is to make your border as random with as much detail as possible.
  • Your border should look like this once details are added.

    Step nine:

Now that your done with the border, add any nature picture inside the header space. Here’s the picture used in this tutorial.
Once you position the picture inside the space, set its layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.

    Final Image:

    Nature Header.
